This canvas is part of the serie MWR, and while the previous MWR works are related in their proportions to a Rauschenberg work (hanged in Nice’ Musee d’Art Modern) this work draws inspiration for its proportions from a Joan Mitchell Cuadriptych revisited at the Met on Nov 2019. I worked several weeks with paper collages, trying to figure out the work format and proportions. Then, many collages after, a final collage was ready to serve as an “unterlagen”, an underlying plan, and all 4 empty canvases were hanged in my studio. it was mid March 2020 and pandemia and confinement started. Thus, work became a daily ritual. a Cypress a day (and, of course, there were no cypress days as well as two cypresses days). The collage plan, as all underlying plans are, and should be, suffered many changes and when the last cypress was drawn, there were 74 trees. 74 miraculous Cypresses. This notion of the miraculous was accompanied by a striking realization, that in Gimatria,
which is an ancient Hebrew mystic practice, where every letter represents a number, 70 would correspond to the letter ע (aiin) and 4 to ד (dalet), which in turn represent two words :
ED - a witness and AD - eternal.
It was a striking realization and a vibrating moment, as if a sign was sent: everything, winter storms as well as summer breeze, will flow to a calm river. Everything is Already Given.

answering to A’s comment: yes, these last works, these drawings, (MWR-RRI, MWR-RRII) has a sense of an archive, at the same time the intervened printed canvases in the “WB Prints Archives serie” become in a way a sort of drawings. I am interested in this swaying and blurriness.
